What is ebru?
Ebru is the art of floating natural colours scattered on thickened water, with the help of gall, shaping them into patterns and transferring them onto paper. This tradition, reaching from the Ottomans to today, was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014.
Colours have their own language: blue speaks of infinity, red of passion, green of peace, yellow of light. The artist gives direction, but the water always has the final word.

The artist
Between the classroom and the ebru tray.
Her love of ebru reaches back more than ten years — to her university days in Turkey. She has never let the art go since: she has given workshops at the Volkshochschule Trier and at die Remise in Quint, at the Kunsthalle Bremen and with numerous organisations — and exhibited at the Bremen trade fair.
In daily life she is a social-pedagogical specialist at a Bremen primary school, accompanying children — including those with special needs — with patience and sensitivity. As the mother of a little daughter, she brings that pedagogical calm together with her artist's soul — every work on the water carries both.
