Stillness
drawn on water
A contemporary reading of the traditional art of ebru. Each work is born on the water, in a single breath; it has no twin.

Each is unique. The works beside this could be lifted from the water only once; the same can never be made again.
More lies beneath the water.
Four moves
The birth of an ebru: from water to paper.
The water thickens
Gum tragacanth is boiled, strained and rested for days. This dense water — the ebru tray — carries the colour and is prepared with patience.
Pigment, tamed with gall
Earth pigments are ground and tempered with ox gall. The gall is the secret that lets the colour spread on the water without sinking.
Breath held, pattern opened
Colour is scattered from the brush; drawn across the water with stylus and comb. From battal to floral, the pattern is born in these few seconds.
Paper meets the water
The paper is laid onto the water in one motion and lifted. The pattern is now in the paper — no going back, no copy.
